General Discussion / WORK POINTS
May 26, 2006, 10:24:27 AM
Thank you VERY MUCH for the quick reply.
I'm defending the concept of work points and needed to know how you people handled it in District 37.
My response to those opposed to work points is simply,
If it isn't the responsibility of racers to put on races, then who's responsibility is it?

General Discussion / work points?
May 26, 2006, 07:59:59 AM
Hello,
I'm a member of the Sage Riders M/C in Utah.  I'm curious as to how you handle work points in your area.
1.  Do you offer work points?
2.  If so, how do you calculate them?
3.  If so, how many years have you been using a wp system?
Any information that you can give would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Alan J. Peterson

Quote from: "SenDesStew"Nick, If you're available Monday we're riding at Bean Canyon again. I'm taking a few club members that have never been there. Anyone else is welcome as well. It's a neat place with both desert and forest. We're meeting at 9:30AM at the off-ramp on Backus Road and the 14. Backus Road is between Rosamond and Mojave.

Dan, you know how to hurt a guy ... gotta work Monday !  Have fun and ride safe my man.   :<img src=" title="Cool" />

Kelly....how did you do? What did you think?

Overall the weekend was a blast. I got there Thursday night just before sign ins for the qualifier closed. I was standing at the sign in table and Tim Clark, the promoter of the event saw me and Cari, came up, started talking to us and eventually said "Hey...do you want to see the track?"

I really didn't want to see it but I knew that the sooner I saw the track, the sooner I could establish my own expectations for the next day.

So Tim took us out to the arena floor and Cari and I walked the track right there on Thursday night. Cari said my face was whiter than a ghost. Honestly, I thought I was gonna hurl right then and there. I was saying to myself, "what the hell did you do?"

Everything on the course was so abstract, so out of context that I honestly thought I wasn't even gonna make it around in practice. Trust me, on the ground, that course is way harder than from the stands...where I was sitting with everyone else on saturday.

The reality is, everything on that course is much easier than what most of us encounter in the 2nd loop of a national H&H or the 3rd loop of an enduro. However, in a the context of a race, we have the ability to find rythmn and flow and work to maintain it over a longer distance. Each section we encounter is not "made or broken" by a single stretch...

So the stuff on the Endurocross track seemed "larger than life" because it was out of context. It was litterly lifted up out of the woods or desert and slammed down on the arena floor, and then, another section, and another... so it was hard to find flow.

So, that night on Thursday I set my expectations, "try to get around the course in practice." "Make a good showing." I knew that I didn't want to break myself because in one week I had RHR and I made it a goal to get another top 10. I also knew that I was doing the Tecate Hare Scrambles in two weeks and I realized that I had a good shot at making a decent showing in the A class.

I came back the next day and had a huge disadvantage of riding in the 1st group. Each race group had a 5 minute practice session, in addition to being in the first group, I was also pointed at to ride from the gate to the course first.

I was way nervious and took my time on the first lap. I soon realized everything was rideable. That's key. Because as I worked to stay smooth and survive, everybody around me was learning how to "MX" their way around the course. I soon discovered that most of the guys riding the qualifier were MOTO guys and while watching the remaining races it became apparent that a big key to success to the qualifier was rythmning sections MX style. this didn't play quite the role on saturday as additional logs were placed in the sections guys were rythmning through.

I also had a hard time with the format. Frankly, I can't stand GPs because of their format and would never race MOTO for the same reason. I sat around and waited for a 5 minute practice session, then I sat around and waited for my 1st heat race, then I sat around and waited for my Semi. I know this is the format for this type of racing, but I was at an obvious disadvantage because my day is basically over at noon on race days...

So I raced my race and Cari said I rode the cleanest out of everyone in my group of about 13 (i think i was 9th) but I just didn't ride on the edge and "race." Thinking back I could have hung it out but I was still in survival mode and decided to just have fun on the course.

I did have a lot of fun. I knew that this being the first time I raced in a MX format that I would not have a chance, so I mainly just abosorbed what was going on around me and tried to have a good time.

I loved the course and would love to see more of these races held in different venues. I think that a great opportunity would be convincing a motorsports complex like Glen Helen to dedicated a corner of their property to a year round endurocross course. They could install lights and hold races at night. A friday night endurocross series sounds to me like a hell of an idea.
