Title: Motorcycle Races at Ventura Raceway
Post by: Richie Wohlers on May 08, 2012, 04:11:14 PM
In case anybody is interested, it looks like Ventura Raceway is going to have Motorcycle races this Saturday (May 12).

They have all kinds of classes.  MX, Flat Track, Quads, Speedway, Vintage, Pit Bikes.
http://venturaraceway.com/
http://venturaraceway.com/pdf/2012%20%205-12%20Motorcycle%20Entry%20Form.pdf

I think I'm going to go (to watch, not to race).   Looks like races start at 5:30pm.  Anybody else interested?

If they have a Begginer class  ;D. If not I'll just have to show'em how lapped traffic can really screw up someones race. Throw down a couple blocks on the leaders and you neveer know the out come ( I may end up getting my ass kicked  8)).

Welcome to my world  ::)
If it was up to Teri the day would last a week.

Was just looking at prices  :o. They are chargeing for everything. 60 bucks to race, 14 to get in another 25 if Teri wants to go into the pits.... This could really hurt my chances of racing....

I'm pretty sure the $14 gate fee is included in the pit pass, and the pit pass is included in race fee.

So I THINK it would cost:
$60 for your race entry (which includes the pit pass)
$25 for Teri's pit pass

$85 total for 2 of you.

Ok as of 7:30 this morning (Saturday) I'm in. I will be headed out to try to make the practice, then the race.
Richie if your going I will be listening for the roar of your voice when I go by. Maybe I'll do a one hander and point at you  ;) ( I've seen'em do it on TV  8)).
I have a feeling, with this being a open class, I'm going to get my butt handed to me.....
Title: Re: Motorcycle Races at Ventura Raceway
Post by: Greg Meyers on May 14, 2012, 09:14:22 AM
Well I went and did the race, and got my ass handed to me.
It being a open class made it a little crazy. There were some real fast guys out there.
Moto track is very small with 1 good size double (that I bitched out on every time  :-[). I saw a couple guys in practice eat shit pretty good and I decided not tonight.
There was a few other D-37 peeps there so I hooked up with them. A few Dirt Diggers and a Hilltopper named Mike (vet Int.)
We raced the same class, so it was on. Who cares about the other guys, I have to beat Mike.
This is kinda how the track was laid out: Start (No gate/ GP style, watch the flag). We were on a speedway track with a small mx track in the middle.
1st big sweeping left turn into very sharp left turn (onto the mx part) you instantly made a sweep to the right where you had to get into 3rd for the double. Then a bunch of small sharp turns and little jumps and more real sharp turns, then back out to the oval. I got into 3rd and felt like I was sliding across the track in the turns (this was very fun).
1st heat I got 1st gate pick and got the hole shot, to the first sharp turn. Then I got smoked. everyone just slammed into each other (the guy in front may of held them up  ;D) and took off. I stayed in front of Mike, but he made me work my butt off to beat him ( he now for sure knows what blocking is and the meaning ride wide  ;)).
2nd moto was about the same. Mike got low in the sweeper on me but as soon as we straightened out the 450 pulled in front and cut down to the inside and I beat him again. We had a lot of fun.
Just watching some of those guys go around that track was great. They run everything there, Choppers, 450's, Honda step through frame 125 (bored to 150  :o).
This was a very fun night.
Oh ya and it being right on the beach made it cold when you weren't racing.
Sorry we never made it up to see you Richie. We really weren't prepared to race this. No place to leave the bike. We'll have the trailer next time and jackets and maybe even a set of clear goggles. The dark tent did nothing for me  ::).

That kid on the 150 (#50) looked so smooth.  Out of all the bikes racing that night, he was consistently the best-looking over the double.  I think he ran in 3 classes.

It's pretty cool how they run so many different kinds of classes - flat track, quads, quad flat track, pit bikes, etc.  The only thing that sucked was that the competition was poor.  There were very few lead changes in any of the races.

As a NOVICE I wouldn't expect you to understand  ;)
I'll be doing more dez after the MX series is over (last year I crashed at Ruts and started the MX season with 3 cracked ribs, wasn't fun).
Invaders and LC are 2 of my fav's  >:(, bummed there not going to happen.
I know at least 1 club member that would like to try to beat me in Invaders race, cause I handed it to him last year (I think there's video of it some where  ;)).

I had a great time again. The main events weren't my best but I had fun.
Jr. Delgado and the family were all there and racing in the same class as Richie and I.
Did the flat track for the first time. Jr. and I went out for practice on the flat track and had a blast. Click it into 3rd and HALL ASS. Those dirt bikes get a little crazy turning at high speed on hard packed dirt. The 1st moto on the flat track was great I think if I remember I got like 3rd maybe 4th. Jr and the guy in up front with'em put on a show. On the freakin gas the whole time and their bikes were side by side through the turns and Jr. out on the flat track for the first time took the win.
Main event of the flat track didn't turn out so well for me.
It was getting late and track was nice and slick. I was doing ok but the faster I went the higher into corner 2 I was going (not good). By the 3rd outta 10 laps I was gettin way to high in the 2nd corner, but had a dude right up my butt so tried to stay on the gas. Next thing the ass end of my bike came into sight (thought that the back fender looked like mine  ???). As I started to lose it, I thought "BRAKES", nope just hold on. So I rode the power slide out (felt like I slid for a mile), couldn't get the bike started till the race was almost over  >:(. JR. killed it.
Onto the Moto part of the night.
There were a few guys in the 450 class, so they split us into 2 moto's. Richie and Jr. went first, then me with the next group. I got 3rd in the moto but new the main was going to be tough. A lot of good young racers were there.
For the main, they lined all of us up. I was the last guy on the first row (Right next to the wall). Flag dropped and I was in 3rd through the first turn. Grabbed the clutch late going into the MX section and stalled  >:(, and there went Richie. It took a couple kicks to gett'er going again.
Then it was on. I had to ride my ass off to try to catch Richie. I could see him, so I put my head down and rode way over it. Finally cought up to him just before the white flag and got by him on the flat track section (the battery went dead on the Main Event on the gopro I was bummed to see this after the race). Jr. won it. When he lapped me I was in the air over the double. I saw him comming and as we were in the air we look at each other... Would've been a great shot.....
Had a great time again. There next event is in September (Labor Day weekend). There are no D-37 races that weekend. If you have a 250 2 stroke or a 450 four stroke make your plans to be there. You can race with 250 four strokes but in a different class (I think they call it the powder puffs  ;)).
Hope to see you all at the MX.

They also have a Pit Bike class that looks like fun.  They have 2 versions, one runs on the "road course" which means half the race is on the dirt oval and half is on the infield, but no jumps.  The other version runs the full MX track.

Some of those guys were jumping their 50's over the double, that I am too chicken to try.

I was planning to.  And then you said you were doing 24 hour, and I didn't really want to go by myself, so I figured I was out.

But now if you're back in, I'll probably give it a go.

So, how did it go guys?

Well.... I have had better races. Flat track was a kick in the ass (for me, don't think Richie liked it as much). Did pretty good both motos, something like 3-5 outta 10 I think.
Moto: I was doing real good in my 1st heat, until the last lap  ::). I was doing the double in front of the grand stands all night (practice and 5 laps in the 1st race). I was in I think 3rd and wasn't carrying enough speed out of the corner headed into the double  :-\ so I tried to seat bounce the jump and came up way short. I knew as soon as I left the jump it was going to be bad news. I hit the face of the other double, nailed the gas and went way out of control, then, over the bars  :-[. Bent the bars, broke the brake lever, snapped off side number plate, basicly ate shit (I'll post the video soon).
Wasn't sure about racing the rest of the night after that. Got back to Mad Jack's van and started changing bars and putting the bike back together.
Nothing hurt to bad that I couldn't race, so went and did the flat track again and the moto. I have some pretty good video of me and Richie racing. I will share, just takes some time.
Even a not so good night of racing is better than a great night of TV. I love going out and racing with friends.....  :D

Even though I suck, it was still fun.

I just can't get at all comfortable on the flat track.  The old guy with the license plate on his bike went too fast for me.
