Great weekend and it was fun sitting in the 100 degree heat with the Bees! I'll let everyone else give details on the race! Way to go Greg and Ryan for finishing 2 loops.
We had 1 guest pitter: Scott & his dad Bob: Young kid and he had fun. He broke his clutch handle on the bomb and rode the entire loop. I have there contact info and they want to guest pit with us again.
Pit help: Teri, Bob, Mr Bus (Dad) Dee and Kent the wimp!
Sun Racers:
Kent (1 loop heat victim) had a great start top 10 Ami line and was moving along pretty good until check 3 and hit a wall! quit sweating and started feeling bad so limped it home!
Bus: (1 loop) had a wreck and the bike was pretty tweeked with no 3rd gear!
Greg 2 loops: great ride
Ryan 2 loops: Great ride
Mysterious four Ace 1 loop (I'm still feeling the effects of the heat and not thinking straight but there was a Four Ace on the expert line) Mike Y?
Had an awesome weekend! (Minus the heat & bees!)
Lead-up to the race:
got there late Friday night and tried to set up camp next to the pits... got the new trailer all squared away, unhitched and all, then noticed I was right in the middle of the course... DAMMIT! Abandoned the idea of camping next to pits and went and set up on the wide open, flat, lake bed. Kent showed up on Sat morning and we proceeded to practice the Bomb. Great lines, mostly on the left, but we knew they would be silted out before the start. We also saw that the left side would be a cheater's friend as you could tell the course veered that way immediately after the bomb... Maybe they should have had a corral to run through to minimize cheaters... I dunno. Anyway, went back to camp and had dinner plus beers with Kent and waited for Greg & Teri. Hats off to Greg and Teri, nothing holds them back (I will let them explain)... They arrived around 8-9ish and after setting up we all hung out and had a good time (maybe too good...)
Race:
Race went well for me aside from the start, another 6-7 kicks before Trigger wanted to play: one of the last off, bummer! Was eating dust then said F-it started going way off the ribbon to find clear air, luckily found faster lines as well and was able to stay on course due to the hanging dust. I made up tons of ground and position. Cruising right along picking off people the best I could and on a long rocky up-hill, Trigger decided to hop off the trial and down the side of the hill - and stall... Dammit! While I was kicking the pig, I looked up and saw Bus go bye, then another couple guys, then Greg… Dammit! Got going again and ended up dicing/trading places with Greg for the rest first loop all the way into the pits, right on Greg’s rear fender. After that I made a push at the beginning of the second loop to try and challenge him some more but, the heat got the best of me. It was super fun racing that close with Greg though. Decided to just sit down and finish the race in conservation mode. Helped a couple of downed riders, even a poor kid who seized his engine about 3-4miles from the finish, what a bummer for him.
Sorry to hear about Bus’ get off and Kent’s overheat :(. All things considered, had a great race and learned a ton about the trailer, and bringing a 6 week old out to the races. Planning on either Lost Coyotes or Desert Daisies/VCMC next, just depends on the weather and $$$, lol. By the way, if that Delgado Jr. kid joins the club, his nickname should be the Freak â€" he is crazy fast
It was an adventure to say the least.
We left as planned 7:30-8:00 Friday night. Got to Acton (about an hour away from the house) and the Motorhome overheated >:(. After a long night getting it back home (2:00 A.M.), got some sleep, got up and started our new plan. Get a hitch put on the Expedition (to pull the trailer) and get out to the dez. After we heard about all the beez and the nice weather, I wasn't in a hurry to get there when the sun was up. Made it up there just in time for some refreshments with Ryan, Dee and Kent. 11:30 rib BBQ (thanks for the use of the Q Ryan). Couple more drinks and off to bed.
Had a pretty good start only to stall it going into the little ditch :o (but I didn't go over the bars ;D). Got going and like Ryan said, found some outside lines and made up a lot of ground. About half way through the loop I see someone going up the butt crack of this hill. Look over and it's Ryan, the race was on. I'd find a line then he would. I got back by him and those dam kids on the 85's (there good in the tight stuff, but pick aside in the sandwashes, cause the 450's work good there). Then I just tried to beat him into the pits. Came into the pits, NO GAS, JUST WATER, RYAN'S RIGHT BEHIND ME, I GOTTA GO ;D. Couple of drinks of water and I was gone. Maybe 15-20 sec. pit stop.
2nd loop was still feeling good. Ran pretty good until just after the 2nd check. My water hose got stuck on something by my bars, I pulled back to free it and kinked the hose. NO MORE WATER ???. Then dumped on a hill and of course the bike fell with bars facing down the hill and gas just pouring out the tank.
The last 2 checks I came into I would drink a water and take off. Made it to the finish, 3rd in class (pretty sure thats 4th T).
I thought I was going to pass out. I just remember Teri taking my bike and going to sit in the shade.
That race kicked my ass. Took today off to recover.
Thought about taking the run in but by 7pm Saturday, I figured I would be better off staying near the house and the A/C. Nice race reports, and congrats to the Romeros on their latest addition. One of these days I will hopefully return to racing soon, got to get some things finished.
